Medfly are attracted to sugar and protein content in fruit so home made recipes can do the trick.
Some recipes seem to work better with certain fruit species. You may try other ingredients and combinations. Compare recipes with friends and neighbours.
| Solution 1 100 grams white sugar 2g dry brewer’s yeast 1L water |
Solution 4 1 tsp borax1tsp sugar 2tsp bran 1L water |
| Solution 2 5mL imitation vanilla essence 20mL household ammonia 50 g sugar 1L water |
Solution 5 1L hot water 1/2 tbsp cloudy 1/2 tsp vanilla essence 100gm sugar 1 tsp dishwashing liquid 1 tsp vegemite |
| Solution 3 Peel from 6 mandarins or two oranges 50mL household ammonia 1L water |
Distribute your solution in 3 or 4 traps.
Place at least two traps per tree. Also place traps in non-fruiting plants to keep Medfly away from fruiting plants particularly close to the neighbour’s fence. Check every week and replace liquid particularly under hot conditions.
Important: keep baiting all year round.
